When it comes to getting rid of skunks, there is no magic spray or repellent. The only proven way to get rid of a skunk is through preventing access, limiting food sources, and trapping and removal.
Here are the most important 4 steps to get rid of skunks in the garden without killing them:
1) Trapping and removal remains the most effective method, by far. Set large cage traps, baited with marshmallows or dry cat food, and catch the skunk. Relocate carefully to a new area.
2) Habitat modification and removal of food sources – you can get rid of skunks by removing other places to live, or any food sources like garbage, pet food, or fallen fruit.
3) Install exclusion barriers around the perimeter of the structure to prevent skunks from living under a shed or porch.
4) Repellents – they are sold, but they genuinely do not work. The only device that may help is a motion-sensitive sprayer.
If you want to resort to lethal measures – we highly advise against poisoning, which is illegal and usually ineffective (and dangerous to dogs and cats). Only lethal traps can do the trick if you know how to use them.
